Experimental Study on the Influences of X-irradiation upon the Goblet Cells in the Small Intestinal mucosa of Albino Rats

Abstract
A single dose of whole body 60OR X-irradiation was given to young adult albino rats each weighing under 200gms. and its influence on the goblet cells of the small intestinal mucosa was observed periodically in extent from six hours to five weeks after irradiation.
The specimans of upper, middle and lower portions of the small intestine were fixed in 10% formol, orth or in Regaud-Kopsch solution and made into paraffin sections of 5p. Stainings were done by hematoxylin-eosin and PAS reaction.
In the observation, all of the goblet cells in each 30 crypts and vilh, boths of which were. cut in the axial direction, of the three portions of the small intestine were counted and the averaged number were considered as total relative number of one rats.
The results were as follows:
1. The total relative number of goblet cells in the small intestine of the normal rat was averaged 98.3 These cells were found in general more often in the lower portion and were diminished craniard. Furthermore these cells were more nunurous in the crypts than in the villi.
2. The cell number in X-irradiated rats, was generally reduced to less than one half of the normal number and decreased to minimum at about 72 hours after 60OR irradiation. At one week after irradiation, it returned to its normal value.
3. After irradiation, the mucus contents of the goblet cells were decreased as well as the numbers of goblet cells.
